A lunchtime concert presents a diverse programme which crosses and combines the cultures of India, China, the Middle East and Western music on one stage.

The UK Chinese Ensemble will be playing a lunchtime concert at the colourful 3-day World Music Festival. Four musicians will play both solo and ensemble music with a selection of
traditional and modern Chinese pieces. Instruments used will be pipa (4-stringed lute), erhu (2-stringed violin), dizi (bamboo flute) and yangqin (hammered dulcimer).
Venue: Whitby Pavilion Complex, North Promenade, Whitby, North Yorkshire.
Cheng Yu and the UK Chinese Ensemble will be playing this evening as part of the celebration for the inauguration of the SOAS Centre of Buddhist Studies.

Cheng Yu has been commissioned by Youth Music to write a children's song. The song, called "Jasmine Flower" is to be published at the end of 2004 as part of a book, entitled "Singbook",
with an accompanying CD. Cheng Yu and The UK Chinese Ensemble will be recording in London's Whitfield Studio.
"Singbook" consists of songs from different cultures with arrangements and accompaniments. It will be published in December 2004.
The British Library held an exhibition of treasures from the Silk Road during the summer months. For this important event, manuscripts and paintings from all parts of the old silk
route were brought together again for the first time since their discovery at the beginning of the 20th century.

Following the success of the 2003 qin (guqin - Chinese 7-string zither) summer school, there was a one week Chinese Music Summer School on July 24th - 30th 2004, giving seven full days of expert tuition on Chinese instrumental music, at the Royal Academy of Music in London. The tutors were: guqin master Professor Li Xiangting, pipa virtuoso Cheng Yu, dizi master Ning Baosheng, and erhu soloist Hu Bin. It was part of the Summer Music School programmes organised by Asian Music Circuit (AMC). The week provided a rare opportunity to learn and explore Chinese music in the UK. Classes were open to all takers, beginners and advanced.
